Group Classes bring together 2 or more students in live online sessions led by you. This article explains how they work, what you control, and what to expect as you begin teaching in a group format.
👥 How it works
Group Classes are live sessions where multiple students join at the same time to learn together.
Unlike 1:1 tutoring, Group Classes are built around a topic that you design in advance. Because you are teaching a group, sessions are structured and not individualized to one student.
At launch:
- Tutors can create a Group Class that can accommodate up to 8 learners.
- In a class, tutors can create multiple sections. Each section is named after the time slot the class is taking place on (e.g., Mondays 4:00 PM - 4:55 PM).
- Learners can only be enrolled in one section per class, and sections are weekly recurring.
- A class can continue running until the tutor chooses to end the class.
This format increases enrollment flexibility and helps create steady participation over time. There are no free or trial Group Classes at this time.
🌟 Why teach Group Classes
For students
Group learning creates opportunities that 1:1 sessions cannot always offer.
Students can:
- Build social confidence while learning
- Practice collaboration and communication
- Engage in enrichment topics that work well in groups, such as STEM challenges, storytelling, or social-emotional learning
- Experience tutoring in a more interactive, social format
For you as a tutor
Group Classes give you more creative and financial flexibility.
You can:
- Design and brand your own class
- Choose topics you are excited to teach
- Set a schedule that fits your availability
- Increase your effective hourly earnings when classes fill
⚙️ What you control when creating a Group Class
Because sessions are topic-based rather than student-driven, you define the structure.
Class details
You set:
- Class name
- Class picture
- Class summary
- Full class description
- Subject
- Grade range
Grade ranges are recommendations. Parents may enroll students outside your suggested range, so use your description to clearly communicate expectations and level.
At this time, you can select one subject per class.
Schedule and size
You decide:
- The day and time the class meets
- The session length, either 25 minutes or 55 minutes
As of now, classes meet once per week, and the class size is capped at 8 students
The class size limit helps maintain a strong student experience and keeps sessions interactive and manageable.
Start date and time
By default, the first session for a new class and section will be scheduled for the same day and time the following week. For example, if you create a class today with a section that meets on Tuesdays at 4:00 PM, the first session will be next Tuesday at 4:00 PM.
You can also click "Edit start date" to choose a different start date and time, up to six weeks in advance.
🔁 Types of Group Classes
Group Classes can take different forms.
In the future, formats may include:
- One-off classes that meet only once
- Cohort-based classes with a defined start and end date
We are beginning with weekly recurring classes to support flexibility and consistent enrollment.
⚠️ Important things to know
- Group Classes are structured around a defined topic
- You are responsible for planning the content and flow
- Grade ranges are guidance, not strict limits
- Maximum class size is 8 students
Because students can join at different times, design sessions that feel accessible to newcomers while still engaging for returning students.
Clear structure and consistency will support retention and student satisfaction.
