At Dojo Tutor, our mission is simple: keep learning consistent and reliable for every student, while giving YOU more chances to shine (and earn 💸). That’s why we’re rolling out short-notice substitute opportunities! This is a way for approved substitutes to accept classes that fall outside of their normal availability. Instead of being limited to your pre-set schedule, you’ll be able to jump in and help families when a class needs coverage at short notice.
Think of it as “on-call” tutoring that you can opt into whenever it works for you!
How It Works
Here’s the play-by-play:
- If a tutor cancels less than 2 hours before class, eligible tutors can swoop in as subs.
- Opt in by setting your status to Active in your tutor dashboard (top navigation).
- When a class needs coverage, we’ll send the opportunity to a small group of tutors.
- You’ll see a pop-up modal with all the details + a countdown timer. You’ll have around 45 seconds ⏱️ to accept or decline.
- If you accept, the class lands right on your calendar instantly, and you’re connected with the student.
- If you decline or let the timer run out, it’ll move to the next tutor.

Q: Do I have to use Last-Minute Substitutes?
A: Nope! 🎉 It’s totally optional and doesn’t replace your regular substitute opportunities
Q: Will this affect my usual schedule?
A: Not at all. This is an add-on for extra flexibility, outside your normal availability. You do not need to make changes to your current schedule
Q: How fast do I need to respond?
A: Super fast! ⏩ These offers are time-sensitive (around 45 seconds). If another tutor grabs it first, you’ll see a message that the class has already been assigned
Q: What is the pay rate for these sessions?
A: You’ll be paid your regular class rate. At Dojo Tutor, tutors are paid for active teaching, the time spent directly supporting and teaching kids. If a family cancels a session, the payout won’t apply since the class didn’t take place. This keeps the system consistent and fair across all sessions while ensuring you’re compensated for the work you deliver.

Q: What if I accept, and something changes?
A: Only accept if you’re 💯 sure you can teach. If something unexpected comes up, follow our normal class cancellation guidelines ASAP.
Q: Will I get multiple offers at once?
A: Nope—you’ll only ever see one offer at a time to keep things simple.
Q: What happens if no one claims an offer?
A: If the class goes unfilled close to the start time, it may be canceled. Families will receive an apology and options for a refund or a make-up session.
