Group Classes Listing Guidelines: Writing Example

About the Writing subject area

Writing classes help learners express their ideas on the page, from crafting sentences and paragraphs to storytelling and poetry. Strong writing classes build confidence and voice through practice, not perfection. Anything focused on the craft of writing belongs here.

Note: Like reading, writing classes should be designed so learners can drop in at any session. Avoid multi-week sequential projects where missing a week means falling behind. Each session should offer a complete, satisfying writing experience.

Example Listing

Title: Pokémon Paragraph Power

Summary: Learners build strong paragraph-writing skills by writing about their favorite Pokémon. We practice topic sentences, supporting details, and conclusions through a subject they already love.

Class Description

What better way to learn paragraph writing than through Pokémon? Each week, learners practice a different paragraph-writing skill using a Pokémon theme, describing a favorite Pokémon’s abilities, comparing two Pokémon, or persuading readers why their pick is the best. By connecting writing fundamentals to a topic learners are passionate about, even reluctant writers get excited to put pencil to paper.

Session Structure & Pacing

Each session opens with a quick “Pokémon of the Week” reveal and mini-lesson on a paragraph skill, moves into guided writing time where learners draft their paragraph with support, and closes with volunteer sharing and celebrations. I check in with each learner, offering encouragement and feedback throughout writing time.

Materials & Setup

Learners need paper (or a notebook) and a pencil. Lined paper works best. No Pokémon cards or games are needed, but learners may bring them if they’d like. I provide all the Pokémon visuals and prompts on screen.

Tips for Families

Who would this class be great for? This class is ideal for learners who can write basic sentences and are ready to practice organizing their ideas into paragraphs. Pokémon fans will be especially motivated, but any learner who enjoys fun writing prompts will have a great time. All skill levels are welcome. I provide sentence starters for those who need extra support.

Parent guidance: This class builds core writing skills in a low-pressure, high-fun environment. Parents may notice their child is more willing to write at home after connecting writing to a topic they love. No homework is assigned, but enthusiastic writers often want to keep going!
