About the Social-Emotional Learning subject area
SEL classes help learners build emotional awareness, empathy, friendship skills, and confidence in a supportive group setting. Great SEL classes create safe spaces for kids to practice understanding themselves and others through activities, discussion, and creative expression.
Note: SEL classes are enrichment experiences, not therapy. They should focus on building social and emotional skills through fun, age-appropriate activities, not on diagnosing, treating, or processing specific mental health concerns. Think friendship skills, emotional vocabulary, and confidence-building.

Title: Friendship & Feelings Circle
Summary: Students explore emotions, develop empathy, and practice friendship skills through interactive discussions, role-play, and creative activities in a supportive group setting.
Class Description
Young learners develop emotional intelligence and social skills in a safe, welcoming environment. Through storytelling, creative activities, and guided discussions, students explore feelings, practice kindness, and build confidence in social situations. Each session is designed to be a positive, affirming experience where every child’s perspective is valued.
Session Structure & Pacing
Each session begins with our feelings check-in circle, explores our main topic through interactive activities like role-play or art, and closes with sharing and positive affirmations. Students participate at their comfort level; some love sharing while others prefer listening and learning from classmates.
Materials & Setup
Students need basic supplies like paper and crayons for creative expression. Activities might include drawing feeling faces, creating kindness cards, or role-playing friendship scenarios. No special materials required, just an open heart and willingness to learn about emotions.
Tips for Families
Who would this class be great for? This class works beautifully for students who are beginning to navigate friendships and understand their emotions. Some social curiosity is helpful, but no previous experience is needed. I adapt activities for different developmental levels while keeping content accessible for all participants.
Parent guidance: This enrichment experience supports your child’s emotional development and social confidence. Parents often notice increased emotional vocabulary and kindness at home. Families can reinforce these concepts naturally through daily interactions. I provide gentle suggestions for extending learning, but nothing is required.
