Lessonspace FAQs

The questions below, compiled from community comments and surveys, have been answered to provide more information regarding the upcoming migration from Zoom to Lessonspace. Please note that this is a living document and will be updated as more questions are asked & answered.

Migration Timeline and Access to Lessonspace

  1. When do we switch to Lessonspace?
The migration to Lessonspace will occur in early January. Once the migration begins, a percentage of teachers will have access to Lessonspace instead of Zoom. Each day, this percentage will increase, and we plan to have 100% of teachers using Lessonspace by mid-January. Once Lessonspace has been activated on your Dojo Tutor account, Zoom will no longer be accessible/used for your sessions.

  2. Can I practice before I teach a real student?
Lessonspace offers a free trial that you can use to practice as soon as today. While some features may be slightly different due to customizations that Dojo Tutor is making, the overall experience is the same. At the time of migration, teachers will be able to access their Lessonspace 15 minutes prior to a session starting. We are evaluating expanding this time after the migration has been completed.

  3. Do we need to create accounts or pay to use Lessonspace?
No. Dojo Tutor is partnering with Lessonspace and will be launching a Dojo Tutor-branded experience within the Dojo Tutor platform. This means that you will not have a dashboard via Lessonspace or log into Lessonspace itself once we have migrated. Spaces will be automatically created for you so that each subscriber has a unique space.

Tutoring Experience and Tools for Tutors

  1. What technology setup is recommended?
Lessonspace is a browser-based tool. This means that there is no app to download, and both teachers and learners can access the tool via most devices with browsers. You can read more about supported devices and Lessonspace-recommended browsers here. Oftentimes, learners join from mobile devices. While there are some limitations on mobile, most features are available. Teachers can use a dual monitor, document camera, and switch tabs being screen-shared with ease. While a secondary camera is not currently supported on Lessonspace, it is on their 2026 roadmap.
  2. How will screen sharing work compared to Zoom?
Currently, teachers can share a tab, window, or full screen via Lessonspace. While sharing a screen, the teacher/student(s) can all see one another, and both user groups can annotate over top of the shared content. These are all comparable to Zoom. Some features are different. For example, sharing a portion of the screen is not possible at this time,e and, due to Lessonspace being browser-based, sharing a tab in the same window as Lessonspace may be challenging for the teacher. It is recommended that teachers use a second screen for the best screen-sharing experience.

  3. How do I use my existing Google Slides (and other materials)?
Google Slides and other materials can continue to be used via screen-sharing as they would be in Zoom. It is important to note that without the ability to share a portion of a screen, this may change how/what materials are shared for some.

  4. Will Dojo Tutor’s resources/templates be in the Lessonspace library?
Yes! We aim to have resources/templates be in the Lessonspace library before the migration to Lessonspace rolls out to 100% of teachers. Teachers will continue to have access to the Tutoring Resources Google folder for resources/templates.

  5. What will learner/family onboarding and access look like?
The Dojo Tutor support team is building a robust set of articles, guides, and tutorials for families. Additionally, the team is offering a number of Open House sessions for families to see the new experience and configure their audio/video settings. While no users (families, learners, or teachers) are required to attend or complete any training prior to their first session via Lessonspace, there are opportunities for learning that are being offered.

  6. How do teachers control learner tools and manage their online classroom?
There may be times when you don’t want learners to make changes (annotate, move objects, etc) to a tab or space. You can do this by turning on read-only mode. Lessonspace offers a variety of classroom management features that teachers can explore and implement in ways that best fit their needs and preferences.

Learners and Families' Safety

  1. Who will be able to access the recordings of sessions?
While every session will be recorded for safety reasons, a limited number of Dojo Tutor employees will be the only individuals with access to these recordings for quality and safety reasons. Neither teachers nor families will have access to recordings.

  2. What can we expect regarding observations as we shift to Lessonspace?
The current process for observations will be changing in early 2026 as we bring greater focus to trust and safety for Dojo Tutor users. We’ll share more information about this separately at a later time. For now, and throughout the migration, teachers should continue to provide high-quality learning experiences that support learner growth and success.

Support

  1. Will there be tech support during live sessions?
During the migration, we will have additional support for questions from teachers and/or families. Based on similar Zoom-to-Lessonspace migrations, most challenges are solved with basic troubleshooting tips found here. This will be the first response to many support requests, and the team will prioritize and escalate as needed from there.
