With Tutor-Set Pricing, families may see different final prices depending on the class length, schedule they choose, whether the selected time falls during peak hours, applicable marketplace fees, and regional taxes.
Because of this, it’s important to talk about pricing in a way that is clear and accurate without promising a final price before the family chooses their schedule.
This guide will help you navigate pricing conversations with families.
What should I tell a family when they ask how much my classes cost?
When discussing pricing with families, refer to the starting price shown on your booking page at Dojo Tutor. You can find the link to your booking page on your profile.
For example:
“My 25-minute classes start at $33 per session. You’ll see the exact price for the schedule you choose before you subscribe.”
Using “starts at” is important because the final price may vary depending on the family’s booking details.
Families will always see their full final price before completing their subscription.
Why should I say “starts at”?
The price displayed on your public Tutor Profile is a starting price.
A family’s final price may vary based on factors such as:
- The class length they choose
- Whether their selected schedule falls during peak hours
- The applicable marketplace fee
- Applicable regional taxes
For example, if your profile says classes start at $33, a family selecting a high-demand peak-hour schedule may see a higher final price. This is expected.
What if a family asks me for the exact price?
You do not need to calculate or estimate their final price.
Instead, you can say:
“Classes start at $X per session. Your exact price will be shown when you select your preferred schedule.”
The booking experience will always provide the family with the most accurate price based on the options they select.
Why can the final price be higher?
The price shown on your profile is a starting price. A family’s final price may be higher based on the class time they choose, including peak hours, as well as applicable marketplace fees and regional taxes.
If a family asks why the price is different, you can say:
“The price shown on my profile is the starting price. Your exact price will be shown when you select your schedule.”
Tutors should not try to calculate or quote marketplace fees, taxes, or the final total themselves.
What should I say after a trial?
Trials are a great opportunity to talk about next steps if a family is interested in continuing.
If they ask about pricing, you can say:
“I’d love to keep working with you! My classes start at $X per session, and you’ll be able to see the exact price for your preferred schedule when you subscribe.”
If the family is considering different class lengths or schedules, encourage them to review the available options in the marketplace.
What if I already discussed a specific price with a family?
If you previously gave a family a specific number and they later see something different when booking, you can clarify without overcomplicating the conversation.
For example:
“The price I mentioned is the starting price. Final pricing can vary based on the schedule selected, especially during peak hours. The amount shown when you book will be your exact price.”
Avoid trying to manually explain or calculate the difference.
What if a family says the price changed?
First, check whether they are comparing the starting price on your profile with the final price for a specific schedule.
You can explain:
“The profile shows the starting price. The final price can vary depending on the class times selected, so the amount shown during booking may be different.”
If something still looks incorrect after the family selects their schedule, they can contact Dojo Tutor Support for help.
What should I avoid saying?
Avoid presenting the starting price as a guaranteed final price.
For example, instead of saying:
“My classes are $X.”
A better practice would be to say:
“My classes start at $X.”
That small distinction helps prevent confusion if the family later selects a schedule with a different final price.
It also helps to avoid:
- Quoting a guaranteed final price before the family selects their schedule
- Promising that every family will see the same price
- Telling families that peak-hour pricing or marketplace fees are mistakes
- Sharing your payout information as part of the family pricing conversation
- Negotiating a separate price directly with a family
How should I talk about my pricing on Chats?
Keep it short and family-friendly.
You can say:
“My classes start at $X per session. You’ll see the exact price for the schedule you choose before you subscribe. You can also view my profile here: [profile link]”
Or:
“Pricing starts at $X per class and can vary depending on the schedule you select. Feel free to take a look at my profile here for more details: [profile link]”
There’s no need to explain the full pricing model unless the family asks.
What if a family is worried about cost?
You can encourage them to review different available class times, since schedule selection can affect their final price.
For example:
“Pricing can vary depending on the class time you select, so it may be worth checking a few schedule options to see what works best for your family.”
Avoid promising that a different time will definitely be cheaper.
What about my tutor earnings?
Your earnings information is separate from the pricing conversation you have with families.
Your Tutor Dashboard will show the earnings associated with your selected prices.
Under Tutor-Set Pricing, tutors generally earn 65% of the applicable tutor-set class price.
After reaching the Earnings Boost threshold of 35 eligible paid classes with the same family, the tutor share increases to 70% for that eligible subscription.
Use your Tutor Dashboard when reviewing your expected earnings. Families do not need this information in order to understand what they will pay.
What about existing families?
Existing subscriptions may have different pricing arrangements than new subscriptions.
Changing your Tutor-Set Pricing does not automatically mean an existing family’s price will change.
Existing subscriptions retain their current family price, and Dojo Tutor may offer payment protection where the newer pricing model would otherwise reduce the tutor’s payout.
Because existing subscriptions can behave differently from new subscriptions, always check your Tutor Dashboard for the most up-to-date earnings information for a specific family. If you’ve any questions about a specific subscription, feel free to reach out to our Support team.
The simplest way to explain pricing
When in doubt, use:
“My classes start at $X per session. You’ll see the exact price for your preferred schedule before you subscribe. Feel free to take a look at my profile here for more details: [profile link]”
That gives families the information they need while keeping the conversation accurate, simple, and consistent.
