Lessonspace is a virtual classroom platform designed specifically for online learning, where students can meet with their tutor, see learning materials, and participate in activities in real time.
Because Lessonspace adjusts to different screen sizes, the layout may look a little different depending on what device you’re using. For more information on the supported devices, browsers, and other technical requirements, read the article "Technical Requirements for Classes in Lessonspace."
Lessonspace on a computer (desktop or laptop)
A computer provides the most complete Lessonspace experience. The screen is large enough to show everything clearly, and it’s easier for students to switch between tools and learning materials.
On a computer, Lessonspace is usually arranged with:
Main classroom area in the center (where the lesson happens).
Video tiles for the tutor and your child.
At the low right-hand side of the screen, a menu containing all meeting controls (settings, screen sharing, mute/unmute button, video on/off toggle, reactions, and chat).
At the top, a toolbar containing all classroom tools.
Enough space to view shared materials without needing to constantly switch screens.
Why we recommend using a computer
Using a desktop or laptop makes it easier for students to:
- Follow along with the lesson.
- See shared content clearly.
- Move between tools smoothly.
- Avoid missing instructions due to limited screen space.
Tip: If possible, use Google Chrome for the best experience.
Lessonspace on an iPad or Android tablet
Lessonspace works on iPads and Android tablets, too! However, the platform's layout may feel more compact than on a computer.
On a tablet, the classroom layout is designed to fit a smaller screen. Some buttons or tools may be moved into menus to save space. Depending on the tablet and screen size, families may notice:
- Fewer items are visible at once.
- Needing to swipe left or right at the toolbar to access all classroom tools.
Lessonspace on a smartphone (not recommended)
While you may access your tutoring session through a smartphone, we do not recommend using it. This is because smartphones have the smallest screen size, which makes it difficult to see classroom content and use tools comfortably.
On a phone, Lessonspace may look simplified, and students may need to switch between views more often.
You may notice:
- Limited visibility of shared materials.
- Tools hidden behind menus.
- Frequent scrolling to navigate.
- Constant tapping to switch between views.
- The Video view, Whiteboard view, and chat are on separate tabs if you're using a smartphone in portrait mode.
- The chat is not available on smartphones in landscape view.
- Difficulty viewing the teacher and lesson content at the same time.
- Missing features
- Screen sharing, for example, is not available on iPhone due to restrictions from Apple.
Because the experience is the most limited on phones, students may miss important parts of the lesson, struggle to view materials clearly, or have trouble using interactive classroom tools.
If a smartphone is the only option, we recommend using it in landscape mode-- just as if you were streaming Netflix!
