Setting Your Own Prices on Dojo Tutor

Dojo Tutor is introducing a new way for tutors to set their own prices for classes.

This gives you more control over how you offer your time on Dojo Tutor, while giving families more choice when finding the right tutor for their child.

💣Please note: This feature is still a work in progress within Dojo Tutor, so some details, images, and screenshots in this article may change as we get closer to launch.

How tutor-set pricing works

With tutor-set pricing, you’ll be able to choose your price for eligible class types.

You may be able to set prices for whichever class types you offer, including:

  • 25-minute 1:1 classes
  • 55-minute 1:1 classes
  • Group classes

💡 You’ll also be able to set discounts for families who book more than one class per week.

Families will see the full class price before they book. This includes your class price plus Dojo Tutor’s marketplace fee, so families can choose the tutor, schedule, class length, and total price that work best for them.

Why should I set my own prices for classes?

Setting your own prices gives you more flexibility and control.

Your price can reflect things like:

  • Your teaching experience
  • Your certifications or subject expertise
  • The class lengths you offer
  • Your availability
  • The kind of schedule you want to build
  • What feels sustainable for your time and energy

Families choose tutors based on many factors, including availability, experience, teaching style, subject fit, and price. Setting a thoughtful price can help families understand the value you bring while helping you build the schedule that works best for you.

What prices can I set?

You’ll be able to set your own base prices within the available pricing range shown in your dashboard.

Prices must be set in whole-dollar amounts.

You may also be able to set discounts for families who book multiple classes per week. These discounts can help make recurring classes more appealing to families while giving you more opportunities to build a consistent schedule.

Will Dojo Tutor suggest a price?

Yes. When you set your prices, you will see a recommended price to help you get started.

You are free to use the recommendation or choose a different price per learner within the available range.

  • 1:1 classes: $5 – $200
  • Group classes: $5 – $50

When choosing your price, keep in mind that higher prices may increase your payout per class, while lower prices may be more attractive to some families.

⭐ The best price is one that feels fair for your time and still helps you stay competitive with families.

Do my existing subscribers keep their current prices?

Yes. Families who already subscribe to classes with you will continue paying their current price for their existing subscription.

If you switch to the new pricing model, your payouts for existing subscribers will update based on the new model. However, your payout for an existing subscription will not go below what you currently earn for that subscription.

⏩ New prices will apply to new bookings going forward.

Can I change my prices in the future?

Yes. You’ll be able to update your prices in the future.

Price changes will apply to new bookings after the change is made. Existing families will not automatically have their current subscription price changed just because you update your listed price.

If a family cancels and later re-subscribes, the new price available at that time may apply.

What happens if I don’t opt into tutor-set pricing?

For now, tutor-set pricing is optional for current tutors.

If you choose to set your prices, your future eligible classes will follow the updated payout model, including the standard 65% payout of the price you set and eligibility for Earnings Boost after 35 eligible paid classes with the same family.

If you don’t set your prices right now, you can continue teaching under your current pricing setup. We may require current tutors to move to tutor-set pricing in the future, but we’ll share more details and give tutors advance notice before any required change.

New tutors will start on the tutor-set pricing model by default.

You can opt in by setting your prices from your Tutor Dashboard.

How are trial classes paid?

Trial class prices are still set by Dojo Tutor. Tutors cannot set their own trial price.

Trial classes will remain $5, which is the price we’ve found to work best for families after testing different trial prices. Under the new pricing model, completed trial classes are paid at the same standard payout rate as other eligible classes: 65% of the base price. For a $5 trial, that means tutors earn $3.25 per completed trial class.

Trial classes will no longer include a separate trial conversion bonus. Instead, trial payouts are part of the updated payout model, which also includes higher payouts for eligible paid classes and Earnings Boost when families continue learning with you over time.

Why did you remove trial conversion bonuses?

Trial conversion bonuses were part of the previous pricing model.

Previously, Dojo Tutor subsidized trial classes: Families paid $5 for a trial, while tutors earned more than that amount for teaching the class. Dojo Tutor also offered trial conversion bonuses when a family continued after the trial.

As we introduce tutor-set pricing, we’ve considered where Dojo Tutor could invest in ways that better support tutors over time. Instead of continuing to fund trial conversion bonuses, we’re investing in a model that:

  • Increases tutor payouts to 65% of the base price for eligible classes
  • Adds Earnings Boost, where payouts may increase to 70% of the base price after you and a family complete 35 eligible classes together
  • Supports continued growth through marketing, partnerships, and other initiatives to bring more families to Dojo Tutor

This means trials are funded differently than before, but the goal is to create a simpler, more sustainable model that helps tutors earn more consistently across each paycheck, not only when a trial converts right away.

We know this change may feel different, especially if you valued trial conversion bonuses. We’ve done extensive financial modeling to help build a system that should support stronger tutor earnings overall while continuing to grow the number of families learning on Dojo Tutor.

[With tutor-set pricing, we’re moving to a simpler model where your earnings are more directly connected to the prices you set and the classes you teach.]

Will I earn more for long-term students?

Yes. Under the new pricing model, you’ll be able to unlock Earnings Boosts and earn a higher share for families who continue taking paid classes with you over time.

Once you and a family have completed the required number of eligible paid classes together (35), your payout for that family may increase for future eligible classes.

Eligible paid classes include:

  • completed paid trials,
  • 1:1 subscription classes,
  • group classes, and
  • classes with more than one child in the same family.

These classes can also count across different subscriptions, class formats, and school years, as long as they are completed paid classes with the same family account.

When a family qualifies, you’ll see an Earnings boost badge, so it’s easy to spot.

What do I get paid for substitute classes?

  • If you teach a substitute class, you’ll be paid your regular class rate for that class type
  • For subscription substitute classes, your pay is based on your own rate for a once-per-week class
  • For trial substitute classes, the standard trial rate applies

As with current substitute class guidelines, if the student no-shows, you’ll still be paid. If the family cancels and the class does not take place, payment does not apply. You can read more about this here.

How much can I expect to make?

Your earnings will depend on several factors, including:

  • The prices you set
  • How many classes families book with you
  • Whether you offer 25-minute classes, 55-minute classes, or both
  • Whether you offer group classes
  • Your availability
  • Family demand for your subjects and schedule
  • Whether families continue learning with you over time
  • Any discounts you choose to offer for multiple classes per week

A simple way to estimate your earnings is to multiply your expected payout per class by the number of classes you expect to teach.

For example:

Your actual earnings may vary based on bookings, cancellations, no-shows, substitute classes, and schedule changes.

Will families see my price before booking?

Yes. Families will see the final class price before they book.

This helps families choose the tutor and class option that works best for their child and budget.

Should I choose a lower price to get more bookings?

Not necessarily.

💰 A lower price may appeal to some families, but price is only one factor families consider. Families may also look at your experience, availability, teaching style, subject expertise, and fit for their child.

Choose a price that feels fair and sustainable for your time while helping you stay competitive.

What happens if I offer both 25-minute and 55-minute classes?

If you offer both class lengths, you’ll be able to set prices for each one.

If you currently only offer 25-minute classes, you will have the option to enable 55-minute classes and set a price for them.

What happens if I offer group classes?

If you offer group classes, you will be able to set prices for those classes, too.

Group class pricing has a different available range than 1:1 classes. You’ll see the available options in your dashboard.

When will I be paid?

Tutor payments will continue to follow the regular payment schedule.

Payments are made twice per month and may include eligible:

  • Trial classes
  • Subscription classes
  • Substitute classes taught
  • Student no-shows for eligible classes
  • Group classes

You do not need to submit an invoice for each pay period. Dojo Tutor’s payment process will continue to generate payments based on eligible payable items. For more information on payments, see this article.

What if my payment looks incorrect?

If something looks incorrect in your payment history or payout report, please follow the payment dispute process in your dashboard.

Include the class details and what looks incorrect so the team can review it.
